Deadly Attack at Friedland Station: Suspect Previously Convicted for Exhibitionism

Tue 2nd Sep, 2025

A tragic incident unfolded at the Friedland train station, where a 16-year-old girl lost her life following a violent altercation. The suspect, a 31-year-old man from Iraq, has been identified as having a prior conviction related to inappropriate conduct.

According to the Göttingen Public Prosecutor's Office, the man was sentenced in November 2024 for an exhibitionistic act involving a woman. This incident, which occurred in April 2024, involved the suspect placing an arm around the woman while exposing himself, leading to a conviction of 40 daily fines, amounting to a total of EUR600.

In addition to this conviction, the suspect was imprisoned for 20 days in July 2025 for failing to pay the imposed fines. At that time, immigration authorities initiated a request for his deportation, as there had been a standing order for his removal to Lithuania since March. However, the Hannover District Court denied the request for detention pending deportation.

On August 11, the suspect allegedly pushed the 16-year-old victim in front of a freight train traveling at approximately 100 km/h. DNA evidence has linked him to the scene, with traces found on the victim's shoulder. He is currently regarded as a prime suspect and has been placed under a confinement order in a psychiatric facility.

The victim had fled from Ukraine with her family in 2022, seeking refuge in Geisleden, Thuringia. This incident has raised significant concerns regarding public safety and the management of individuals with a history of violent behavior.
