Ukraine Targets Outdated Military Equipment in Ongoing Conflict
Section: Politics
In a significant development, three hostages held by Hamas have been released in the Gaza Strip. A live broadcast showed the men being handed over to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The individuals, identified as Ohad Ben Ami (56), Or Levy (34), and Eli Scharabi (52), appeared visibly unwell, sparking distress among their families. Several relatives were seen in tears upon witnessing the condition of the men on television.
Reports indicate that Ohad Ben Ami, who is believed to also hold German citizenship, looked significantly aged, with relatives stating he appeared at least ten years older than his actual age. Or Levy's brother expressed his sorrow at seeing him in such a state after enduring his ordeal. The son of Or Levy, whose mother was tragically killed at a music festival on October 7, was eagerly awaiting his father's return.
The release of these three individuals is part of a broader agreement, whereby Israel is expected to free 183 Palestinian prisoners from its jails. This group includes 18 individuals serving life sentences and 111 others who were detained following the events of October 7. Currently, a total of 76 hostages remain in Gaza, with Israeli sources indicating that 35 of them are already deceased. The next group of hostages is anticipated to be released over the upcoming weekend, as part of an arrangement involving the release of over 1,900 Palestinian prisoners.
In a related context, the U.S. government recently approved the sale of military equipment, including bombs and missiles, to Israel, amounting to over $7.4 billion. This approval, made by the U.S. Department of State, is aimed at enhancing Israel's military capabilities to address current and future threats. Officials emphasized that this transaction would bolster Israel's national defense and serve as a deterrent against regional threats.
Furthermore, the Israeli authorities received a delayed list of names for three additional hostages scheduled for release from Hamas custody. The anticipated release of a mother and her two young children, also believed to be German citizens, has been postponed. Meanwhile, Jarden Bibas, an Israeli with dual Argentine citizenship, has been confirmed as released. The fate of his family remains uncertain, as Hamas has previously claimed they were killed during Israeli airstrikes, a claim that has not been verified by Israeli authorities.
In another development, the Israeli Defense Minister has instructed military officials to refrain from publicly criticizing the U.S. President's controversial plan regarding the Gaza Strip. This directive follows remarks from a military intelligence chief who expressed concerns that such a plan could escalate tensions in the West Bank, particularly with the approach of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Meanwhile, Hamas has accused Israel of delaying agreed-upon humanitarian aid deliveries, including tents and fuel. However, Israeli sources contend that they have exceeded the agreed daily quota of aid trucks entering Gaza.
In a broader international context, 79 nations have criticized recent U.S. sanctions imposed on the International Criminal Court (ICC), citing concerns that these measures could foster impunity for serious crimes and undermine international law. The sanctions, enacted by the U.S. President, were justified by claims that the ICC had overstepped its bounds by issuing arrest warrants against Israeli officials.
