Christian B. Faces Imminent Release Amid Maddie McCann Investigation

Mon 15th Sep, 2025

Christian B., the prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, is set to be released from prison shortly, as his cooperation with the British police has reportedly been lacking. The London Metropolitan Police have attempted to interview him regarding the case, but these efforts have been unsuccessful due to his refusal to engage. Scotland Yard has confirmed that B. is expected to be a free man by September 17, as he completes a sentence for a separate conviction of rape handed down by the Braunschweig Regional Court in 2019.

Both German and British authorities continue to regard B. as a key figure in the ongoing investigation into the case of the missing three-year-old, who vanished while on holiday with her family in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in 2007. B. has a criminal history that includes a conviction for the sexual assault of a 72-year-old American woman in the same area in 2005. He served a significant portion of his sentence for this crime, which will conclude with his impending release.

The British police remain committed to pursuing all viable leads in the McCann case, despite the challenges posed by B.'s non-cooperation. A request for mutual legal assistance to conduct a formal interrogation has been submitted, but B. has chosen not to provide a statement. In a recent communication, the Metropolitan Police emphasized their determination to continue investigating all promising avenues, irrespective of the circumstances surrounding potential questioning.

As of now, the Braunschweig Public Prosecutor's Office has labeled B. as a dangerous individual and has sought a supervisory order from the court. This could entail him wearing an electronic ankle monitor to track his movements, as authorities express concern over the possibility of recidivism. A spokesperson for the prosecutor's office highlighted the necessity of monitoring B. closely, citing the evaluations of court-appointed experts who have assessed his risk level.

The release date is anticipated for Wednesday, although the court has not ruled out the potential for his discharge to occur earlier. Official comments are limited, given privacy and data protection regulations.

Christian B.'s past includes a series of prior convictions for offenses related to sexual violence and drug possession. He had previously resided in Portugal, where he reportedly engaged in various temporary jobs and criminal activities, including break-ins at hotels and vacation resorts. The authorities in Braunschweig have maintained jurisdiction over his case due to his historical ties to the area.

Madeleine McCann disappeared on May 3, 2007, just days before her fourth birthday, from her family's holiday apartment in a resort while her parents dined nearby. Despite extensive international searches and calls for information from her family, no trace of her has been found.

Over the years, multiple suspects have emerged in the McCann case, with both British and Portuguese law enforcement agencies conducting extensive investigations. German authorities have recently renewed search efforts along the Algarve coast, including searches of abandoned properties, wells, and forests, in hopes of uncovering new evidence.
