Charges Filed Against Members of Climate Activist Group

Mon 24th Mar, 2025

The Munich Public Prosecutor's Office has officially charged five members of the climate activist group formerly known as Letzte Generation (Last Generation) with forming a criminal organization. This announcement was made by the group itself, stating that the indictment has been submitted to the Munich District Court I.

The charges allege that the accused individuals established a criminal association aimed at committing various illegal acts. The indictment consists of 149 pages, detailing the allegations against the defendants, which include prominent climate activist Carla Hinrichs. Hinrichs, who previously served as a spokesperson for the organization, was sentenced in January 2024 to a two-month suspended prison term for her involvement in a protest where she glued herself to a road, causing significant traffic disruption.

Members of the group have characterized the indictment as an assault on civic engagement, which they believe is a fundamental component of democracy. In a significant shift, the group has rebranded itself as Neue Generation (New Generation) after dropping its former name last year.

This legal action marks a notable development in the ongoing tension between climate activism and governmental authorities. The prosecution's stance highlights the increasing scrutiny that public demonstrations and activist groups face, particularly those employing disruptive tactics to draw attention to their environmental causes.

As the case unfolds, it is likely to spark further debate regarding the limits of protest and the role of civil disobedience in advocating for climate action. The legal ramifications for the accused could set precedents for how similar cases are handled in the future, potentially influencing the strategies employed by activists across the country.

The public's reaction to this indictment remains to be seen, as climate activism continues to evoke a wide range of responses, from support for the urgency of climate issues to criticism of the methods employed to raise awareness.
