Tragic Cable Car Accident in Italy Claims Four Lives; German Family Survives

Naples, Italy - A cable car accident near Naples has resulted in the tragic loss of four lives, while a German family narrowly escaped the disaster. The incident occurred on Thursday as the cable car was just a few meters from the base station when the cable snapped, sending the gondola plummeting.

The five-member German family was traveling with four Erasmus students, including two Germans and two French nationals, on their return journey from Monte Faito in Castellammare di Stabia. Just after 2:30 PM, the cable broke unexpectedly, leading to a catastrophic fall just moments before they were due to arrive at the station.

The gondola fell approximately 10 meters before coming to an abrupt halt, swinging dangerously afterward. One of the Erasmus students described the experience as akin to being on a roller coaster, indicating that the group did not initially grasp the severity of the situation. They were successfully evacuated after about fifteen minutes, with no major injuries reported.

However, the tragedy deepened for the occupants of the gondola traveling in the opposite direction. Four of the five passengers onboard that gondola were found dead at the scene. Among the deceased were individuals from Israel and the UK, along with the gondola operator. Only one passenger survived the fall but sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a hospital for immediate care.

Despite the traumatic experience, the German family reported feeling fortunate to have escaped with only minor injuries. One family member indicated that they were mostly unharmed, aside from a slight bruise sustained by one of the children, while acknowledging that the children experienced fear during the ordeal. Reports indicate that the family has since continued their travels in Italy.

The cable car route from Castellammare di Stabia to Monte Faito is a popular attraction for tourists, known for its breathtaking views and accessibility. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the cable break and the safety protocols in place for the cable car operation.
