Broadcom Launches Beta Testing for VMware Cloud Foundation 9

Tue 4th Mar, 2025

Broadcom has initiated a closed beta test for its latest version of VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9, aiming to simplify the management of private cloud environments. Currently, access to this beta version is limited to a select group of customers, with plans to expand the testing phase in the coming week.

VCF 9 introduces significant enhancements designed to streamline the creation and management of private cloud setups through the vCenter management application. Previously, users required multiple tools for such tasks, but this new release aims to integrate these functionalities into a single platform. Further improvements include the implementation of a Single Sign-On feature for the various components of the private cloud, as well as updates to license management, automation, and access to virtual machines (VMs), Kubernetes resources, and storage.

When VCF 9 was initially announced in August, Broadcom emphasized its commitment to unifying the virtualization tools into a cohesive platform with a consistent user interface. Following its acquisition of VMware, Broadcom shifted from selling individual virtualization tools to offering subscription-based software packages. In response to customer feedback, the company reinstated some applications, including vSphere Enterprise, after some clients expressed dissatisfaction with the new model. Despite warnings from experts regarding the potential costs associated with transitioning to long-term contracts, Broadcom experienced a decline in its customer base, notably with the departure of IT service provider Rackspace, which moved 3,000 virtual machines away from VMware infrastructure.

Broadcom's marketing chief acknowledged that initial skepticism among customers post-acquisition was prevalent, but he expressed optimism that the company's actions have since regained their trust. He stated that many customers now feel more comfortable with Broadcom's approach, highlighting the competitive pricing of VCF compared to other options in the market. Additionally, he assured that a comprehensive service strategy is in place to provide support for VCF 9 upon its official release.
