Billy Joel Cancels Tour Due to Brain Condition Diagnosis

Sat 24th May, 2025

NEW YORK -- Renowned musician Billy Joel has announced the cancellation of all scheduled concerts throughout North America and England following a diagnosis of a brain condition that has impacted his sensory functions.

In a recent social media post, Joel disclosed that he has been diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a disorder characterized by an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. This condition can lead to various cognitive and physical issues, including difficulty in thinking, concentrating, and maintaining balance, as well as impairments in memory and movement, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Joel's medical team indicated that the symptoms of NPH have been worsened by his recent concert performances, which have affected his hearing, vision, and overall balance. Under medical advice, he is currently undergoing targeted physical therapy and has been instructed to refrain from live performances during this recovery phase.

In his statement, Joel expressed his regret at disappointing his fans and conveyed his appreciation for their understanding during this challenging time.

Earlier this year, the iconic singer, known for hits like "Piano Man" and "Uptown Girl," underwent surgery and began a course of physical therapy. At that time, his doctors had anticipated a complete recovery, but it remains uncertain whether those earlier medical challenges were related to his current diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

NPH is a relatively uncommon condition that can lead to significant complications if left untreated. It may cause difficulties with walking, bladder control, and cognitive functions, with symptoms potentially worsening over time. Treatment typically involves surgical intervention to install a drainage system for the excess fluid, and physical therapy is often required post-surgery.

At the age of 76, Joel concluded a successful ten-year residency at Madison Square Garden in July 2024 and continued his touring activities. Upcoming performances were set to take place at prominent venues, including Yankee Stadium and Citi Field in New York, as well as MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Fans who purchased tickets for these events will receive refunds.
