Brandenburg Government Continues Amid Coalition Breakdown; Health Minister Remains in Office

Tue 6th Jan, 2026

The state government of Brandenburg faces a period of uncertainty following the dissolution of the coalition between the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Alliance for Social Justice (BSW). Despite the end of this political partnership, all sitting ministers, including Health Minister Britta Müller, will temporarily remain in their positions as the region navigates its current governmental crisis.

The announcement regarding the coalition's dissolution was made at the Brandenburg State Chancellery. The SPD, which had entered coalition talks with the BSW in late 2024 to secure a stable majority in the state parliament, has now declared the alliance over. The breakdown was precipitated by the departure of three BSW parliamentary members, including the Deputy Premier and Finance Minister Robert Crumbach, who has since joined the SPD's ranks. Crumbach cited significant differences between the current BSW and the party's original vision as his reason for leaving.

As a result of these developments, Brandenburg will operate under a minority government for the time being. All cabinet members are to continue in their roles, including Britta Müller, who serves as the region's Health Minister. Müller, previously unaffiliated with any party, joined the BSW only a few months prior to the coalition's collapse and is currently the only state-level health minister from the BSW.

There are no immediate plans for a new election, as both the State Premier and the SPD's general secretary have ruled out this option. However, alternative strategies for forming a new government are under discussion. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has indicated a willingness to engage in dialogue with the SPD to explore the possibility of establishing a new coalition. The CDU's parliamentary leader has stated the party is open to cooperation if approached by the SPD.

The recent political upheaval has prompted the Alternative for Germany (AfD) to call for a special parliamentary session to address the consequences of the coalition's dissolution. The AfD's parliamentary manager has announced that a formal request for this session will be submitted to the state parliament.

This period of transition is likely to impact the functioning of Brandenburg's government, including the administration of health policies. With Britta Müller remaining in her post, continuity is expected in the state's health department operations. However, the broader political landscape remains in flux as parties negotiate potential new alliances and parliamentary procedures.

The situation is being closely monitored, with further developments anticipated as Brandenburg's political actors seek to restore stability and chart a path forward for the state government.
