Brandenburg Coalition Reaches Compromise in Budget Dispute

Wed 4th Jun, 2025

The ongoing budget dispute in Brandenburg has taken a new turn as the CDU opposition has decided to withdraw its planned constitutional complaint regarding the inclusion of experts in the budget discussions. This development paves the way for the passage of the double budget for the current and upcoming year, which is expected to be finalized in June.

The coalition partners, consisting of the SPD and BSW, have acknowledged the concerns raised by the CDU and proposed a joint hearing scheduled for next Thursday. The CDU faction has confirmed that, given this new arrangement, they will temporarily refrain from pursuing legal action against the state government.

The CDU had previously criticized the dual role of two academic experts who participated in an April hearing regarding proposed changes to the legal framework for increasing debt levels. It was alleged that these experts also prepared reports for the Finance Ministry on the same topic, leading to accusations of deception against Finance Minister Robert Crumbach.

Despite these allegations, the coalition and Minister Crumbach have maintained their stance, asserting that there were no issues with the process. CDU financial policy spokesperson Steeven Bretz expressed relief at the agreement but emphasized the importance of financial stability for Brandenburg. He warned that the proposed changes could significantly increase the state's debt from EUR500 million to over EUR3 billion.

This development reflects a broader negotiation strategy within the Brandenburg government as it grapples with fiscal management while addressing the demands of opposition parties. The ability to reach a consensus in such contentious discussions is crucial for ensuring the financial well-being of the region.
