Public transportation in Berlin is slowly returning to normal after a recent bout of freezing rain forced the suspension of nearly all tram lines in the city. The severe weather event, characterized by icy conditions, led to extensive disruptions across the capital's tram network. As efforts to restore services continue, the Berlin public transport operator (BVG) has announced that a significant number of tram lines are operational again, though passengers should still anticipate delays and partial service interruptions.
According to the BVG, most key metro tram lines have resumed service, offering varying frequencies depending on the route and ongoing weather-related challenges. For example, line M1 is now running between Am Kupfergraben, Eberswalder Straße, and Am Steinberg at intervals of 10 to 20 minutes. Line M2 also operates between Alexanderplatz and Am Steinberg every 5 to 10 minutes, while the M4 line is running between Hansastraße and Hackescher Markt at a similar frequency.
Additional tram services have resumed as follows:
In addition to the metro lines, standard tram routes have also seen partial restoration. Line 18 is running between Riesaer Straße and Landsberger Allee/Petersburger Straße, while line 21 operates between Holteistraße and S-Bahnhof Lichtenberg. Line 68 is serving passengers every 20 minutes between Wendenschloß and S-Bahnhof Grünau. Despite these improvements, travelers are reminded to check for updates and remain prepared for possible changes as crews continue clearing ice from overhead lines and other infrastructure.
The BVG has confirmed that the U2 underground line, which had experienced service issues due to the weather, is now functioning as scheduled throughout its network. Bus services are also reported to be running without major disruptions at this time.
While the restoration of tram services marks a positive step forward, the BVG warns that further limitations are likely to persist into Wednesday. Technical teams are working through the night to ensure that overhead lines and other components are free from ice and safe for operation. The BVG is optimistic that all services currently running will be maintained, but it refrains from offering a definitive forecast for full network normalization until conditions further improve.
The meteorological outlook appears favorable, with no additional freezing rain predicted in the immediate future. However, the BVG continues to prioritize safety and urges passengers to plan ahead, check for the latest service updates, and allow for extra travel time while full operations are restored.
Residents and commuters are advised to stay informed through official BVG communication channels and local news sources for the most recent information on public transportation status in Berlin.
