Temporary Closure of Berlin's Tiergarten Tunnel Due to Staff Shortages

Mon 8th Sep, 2025

The Tiergarten Tunnel in Berlin was closed for several hours on Monday due to unexpected staff shortages, causing significant traffic congestion in the area. The closure was implemented as a precautionary measure after several employees reported sudden illnesses, which left the tunnel's security monitoring understaffed.

According to a spokesperson from the Senate Department for Transportation, the tunnel's security system typically relies on the oversight of six personnel. However, due to the unforeseen absences, the decision was made to close the tunnel to ensure safety. The closure began at approximately 6:15 AM, leading to traffic delays on the Heidestraße towards the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) as drivers were forced to seek alternative routes.

Public transportation services were also affected, with several bus routes being rerouted due to the closure. The situation prompted commuters in Berlin to anticipate longer travel times, particularly as the closure coincided with the end of the summer holidays.

By around 2 PM, the Tiergarten Tunnel was reopened to vehicles in both directions, according to updates from the Traffic Information Centre. Initial reports of technical difficulties were later clarified by officials, who confirmed that the closure was strictly due to staffing issues.

This incident follows a previous closure of the tunnel that occurred just a week earlier, when a truck driver lost control and became stuck inside the tunnel, causing damage to the infrastructure. However, officials emphasized that the current situation was unrelated to that earlier incident.

As the city continues to manage its transportation systems, officials are working to develop strategies to mitigate the impact of unexpected staff shortages and ensure that critical infrastructure remains operational.
