Majority of Berlin Residents Support Extension of A100 Highway

Mon 6th Oct, 2025

A recent survey conducted by the Civey polling institute has revealed that a significant portion of Berlin's residents are in favor of extending the A100 urban highway. Approximately 57% of those surveyed expressed support for the highway's expansion to Lichtenberg, while nearly 32% opposed the idea. The survey included responses from 2,500 Berliners aged 16 and older, gathered between August 27 and September 20.

The backing for the 17th segment of the A100, which would connect Treptower Park and Storkower Straße, is particularly strong among supporters of the CDU, FDP, AfD, and the BSW. Additionally, a notable number of SPD voters also favor the continuation of the highway. In contrast, the majority of supporters from the Left Party and the Greens are against the extension, with 79% of Left Party supporters and 71% of Green Party supporters opposing it.

Despite this public support, the future of the A100 extension remains uncertain. In mid-September, the federal highway authority assessed that the 17th segment of the A100 is unlikely to be realized within this decade. The authority has categorized this segment as a lower priority, and there is currently no definitive timeline for its construction. Previously, the highway's development was listed among projects expected to commence by 2025, but that status has now been altered.

The recent completion of the 16th segment of the A100, which took over a decade to finish, also faced considerable delays and controversy. Following its inauguration at the end of August, the area around the new entrance and exit in Treptow has been plagued by traffic congestion and confusion, leading to protests from local residents.
