Berlin - A recent incident involving a firework known as a 'Kugelbombe' has resulted in extensive damage to seven residential buildings in the Schöneberg district, injuring five residents. In response to the explosion that occurred during the New Year's celebration, police initiated a series of raids early Thursday morning.

The operation commenced around 6 AM, focusing on the Schöneberg area, where eight young individuals, aged between 20 and 25, are reported to be implicated. These suspects were taken to a detention facility as authorities executed searches at nine locations across the districts of Neukölln and Schöneberg.

Approximately 150 officers participated in the operation, which included the use of battering rams to gain access to the targeted residences. The total number of police personnel involved in the raids reached 160.

In the aftermath of the explosion, which took place shortly before 2 AM near the intersection of Hauptstraße, Belziger, and Vorbergstraße, significant damage was reported. Windows shattered, and structural damage occurred even on upper floors of the affected buildings, resulting in visible cracks in the walls. Additionally, parked vehicles in the vicinity were also damaged.

The explosion rendered 36 apartments uninhabitable, prompting the evacuation of residents, and left five individuals injured, with two requiring hospitalization. The incident has raised serious concerns about public safety during festive celebrations, particularly related to the use of dangerous fireworks.

Berlin has experienced a surge in emergency calls during New Year's celebrations, with over 2,000 incidents reported. This alarming trend has included not only the use of explosive fireworks but also assaults on police officers, bus drivers, and emergency medical personnel.

The police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring public safety and have taken measures to investigate and mitigate the risks associated with illegal fireworks. The recent events have sparked discussions among community leaders and residents about the need for stricter regulations and enforcement regarding firework usage during celebratory events.
