Authorities in Berlin are investigating the involvement of one of their own officers in violent incidents that took place during a Hertha BSC football match at the Olympiastadion. The officer, who is assigned to the northern section of the city, is suspected of participating in the clashes that erupted on January 17 during the game between Hertha BSC and FC Schalke 04. According to police sources, the officer was off duty at the time of the disturbances.
The Berlin State Criminal Police Office (LKA) has launched a formal inquiry into the officer's potential role in the unrest, which saw several police personnel and spectators injured. As part of ongoing investigations, the officer is scheduled to be questioned on Monday. This step follows a public appeal by law enforcement, which included the publication of images of 18 individuals believed to have been involved in the violence. Since the appeal, ten of these individuals, including the police officer in question, have been identified by name.
The unrest occurred at both the entrances to the stadium and within the eastern section of the arena. According to police statements, a larger group of individuals began throwing objects at officers, prompting a rapid escalation of the situation. The violence reportedly started nearly two hours before kick-off at the stadium's East Gate, with further incidents occurring as fans entered the ground and in the stands. Multiple law enforcement officers sustained injuries, and several fans were also reported hurt during the clashes.
The investigation is examining possible breaches of the peace and other criminal offenses. In addition to the criminal inquiry, authorities are also considering disciplinary actions against the police officer if allegations are substantiated. The officer's status within the police force is currently under assessment pending the outcome of the questioning and further investigation.
Police have faced criticism from sections of the Hertha BSC supporter community, who allege that law enforcement failed to adhere to previously agreed-upon protocols with the football club and that this contributed to the escalation of hostilities. According to fan representatives, initial confrontations began at the stadium's East Gate, suggesting that tensions were heightened before the majority of attendees had even entered the arena.
The violence at the Olympiastadion has raised concerns about security measures at large sporting events and the conduct of both fans and police. The incident has also sparked debate within the police force regarding internal discipline and the need for thorough vetting of personnel. The identification of a serving officer among the suspects has intensified scrutiny of police practices and protocols for monitoring off-duty behavior.
Law enforcement continues to pursue leads to identify and apprehend additional individuals believed to have participated in the violence. The investigation remains active as authorities work to clarify the circumstances that led to the outbreak of disorder and to determine the responsibility of all involved parties. Updates on the status of the investigation and any forthcoming disciplinary actions are expected following the officer's questioning and further review of evidence.
