A suspended police officer has admitted to his involvement in a robbery that occurred during a private car sale in Berlin. The incident took place on a supermarket parking lot in the Reinickendorf district, where an agreement had been made for the purchase of an Italian sports car, valued at EUR189,000. An initial cash payment of EUR68,000 was to be handed over as a down payment.

According to investigators, the buyer, an automobile dealer, arrived at the location with two companions to meet the seller. During the transaction, two individuals dressed in black approached the vehicle. Both men, including the accused 42-year-old officer, wore vests resembling those used by the Berlin police, carried handcuffs on their belts, and had softair pistols in holsters. The suspects claimed they needed to confiscate the money due to suspicions of illegal activity.

During the proceedings at the Berlin Regional Court, the defendant largely admitted to the charges, explaining that he had been persuaded by another person to participate. He admitted to impersonating an active duty police officer in order to steal the cash. The officer, who has been suspended from duty for approximately five years due to other ongoing investigations, was apprehended in the act on 16 January and has remained in pre-trial detention since then.

The prosecution has charged the defendant with aggravated theft, dangerous interference with road traffic, and grievous bodily harm. Investigations revealed that a total of EUR71,000 was taken during the robbery. The defendant's accomplice reportedly took not only the down payment for the car but also an additional EUR3,000 that was located in a van belonging to the buyer's associates.

After the suspects seized the money, the buyer requested a receipt, prompting both perpetrators to quickly leave the scene in their vehicle. When pursued by the victims, the suspects' car was cornered in a dead-end street. In the ensuing attempt to escape, the accomplice allegedly drove over the foot of one of the men before taking the cash and fleeing the area on foot.

The officer has refrained from providing further details about his accomplice. The court has scheduled at least three more hearing days, with proceedings expected to continue until late July. The case has drawn attention due to the involvement of a suspended law enforcement officer, highlighting the challenges posed by breaches of public trust within official institutions.

Authorities continue to investigate the involvement of additional suspects and the circumstances leading to the officer's participation in the crime. The trial underscores the importance of verifying the identity of individuals claiming to be law enforcement, especially in high-value private transactions. The Berlin police have reiterated their commitment to transparency and accountability while the legal process unfolds.
