Water Main Break in Berlin-Pankow Causes Road Closures and Public Transport Disruptions

Sun 1st Feb, 2026

A significant water main break in the Berlin district of Pankow has caused substantial disruptions to road traffic and public transport services on Sunday. The incident, which occurred on Greifswalder Straße near the intersection with Am Friedrichshain, has resulted in the complete closure of the affected roadway while repair work is underway.

According to local authorities, the damaged water pipe was identified as a supply line with a diameter of 25 centimeters. The break led to the erosion and undermining of the street surface, prompting immediate safety measures. As a result, vehicular traffic is currently prohibited on Greifswalder Straße at the site of the incident. Pedestrians, however, retain access to the adjacent sidewalks and can continue to pass through the area on foot.

The disruption has extended to the city's public transport services, with the Berlin Transport Company (BVG) reporting that tram line M4 and bus routes 142 and 200 are affected. The M4 tram and bus 142 have been rerouted to avoid the closed section, while bus 200 is currently bypassing the Mollstraße/Otto-Braun-Straße stop. Commuters are advised to check updated schedules and routes as the situation develops.

Additional closures have been implemented on Am Friedrichshain street, specifically at house number 35, as well as restricted access from Greifswalder Straße and Otto-Braun-Straße into Am Friedrichshain and Friedenstraße. Repair crews from the Berlin Water Works and a construction company are on-site, working to address the damage and restore the infrastructure as quickly as possible.

Officials have confirmed that the water supply for local residential buildings remains unaffected, as the ruptured pipeline does not directly service any homes in the immediate area. Nevertheless, the presence of repair teams and heavy machinery has necessitated extensive road closures to ensure both safety and efficient progress.

At this stage, no definitive timeline has been provided for the completion of repairs or the reopening of the affected roads and transport lines. Authorities have cited weather conditions as a factor in the speed of the restoration process and have assured the public that every effort is being made to resolve the situation swiftly.

Residents and commuters in the affected area are encouraged to seek alternative routes and follow updates from the city's transport and water authorities. Further information will be provided as restoration work progresses and more details become available.
