Special Task Force Investigates New Gunfire Incidents Tied to Organized Crime in Berlin

Mon 18th May, 2026

Authorities in Berlin are investigating a recent surge in violent incidents believed to be linked to organized crime networks. In the latest case, unknown individuals targeted a business establishment in the Wedding district by firing multiple shots at its storefront during the early hours of the morning. Police were alerted after an employee discovered bullet holes in the shop window upon arriving at the premises on Turiner Straße. The specialized unit 'Ferrum' from the Berlin State Criminal Police Office, which focuses on organized crime and extortion, has taken over the investigation.

This incident is part of a growing pattern of violent acts involving firearms reported across Berlin over the weekend. Prior to the attack in Wedding, shots were fired at a residential building in Reinickendorf. The perpetrators managed to escape and remain at large. During a separate police search operation in Kreuzberg, officers uncovered a firearm, ammunition, a significant quantity of cocaine, and several gold bars, signaling the scale and seriousness of the criminal activity.

These developments follow a major police operation the previous week, during which authorities executed extensive raids across several neighbourhoods. Law enforcement officers searched 28 apartments and apprehended nine suspects believed to be connected to organized criminal groups. The operation involved approximately 570 officers, including members of special task forces. Items seized included illegal drugs, cash, firearms and firearm components, blank-firing pistols, two vehicles, as well as various digital storage devices and mobile phones.

Official police statistics indicate that in 2025, there were 515 recorded cases of gunfire incidents in Berlin. Investigations suggest that criminal organizations frequently use threats and violence to intimidate local business owners, particularly those with Turkish and Kurdish backgrounds, compelling them to pay protection money. In certain cases, individuals have been shot in the legs as a warning, highlighting the severe nature of these extortion tactics.

According to law enforcement officials, some of the organized groups responsible for these incidents originate from Turkey. These groups may even arrange for perpetrators to travel specifically to Berlin to carry out such acts of violence. The ongoing investigations by the dedicated task force reflect the authorities' increased efforts to curb organized crime and ensure the safety of residents and business owners in the city.

The continued presence of armed violence underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing the activities of sophisticated criminal networks. Police have reiterated their commitment to ongoing investigations and urge anyone with relevant information to come forward as efforts continue to dismantle these organizations and restore a sense of security throughout Berlin.
