Berlin Teams Up with Federal States for Olympic Bid in 2036 or 2040

Berlin is positioning itself to submit a bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in either 2036 or 2040, intending to collaborate with several federal states. In a recent announcement, the Sports Senator revealed that the capital will partner with Brandenburg, Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Schleswig-Holstein.

The initiative reflects the requirements set forth by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), which emphasizes the need for a national application rather than a bid solely from Berlin. The senator indicated that the city is in close coordination with these states as they work towards a combined proposal.

As part of the application process, Berlin and its partners must submit their proposals to the DOSB by May 31. The DOSB has outlined a necessity for a 'One-Village Concept,' which entails establishing a primary host city or region while facilitating various sports events across different locations in Germany.

Additionally, it has been reported that other major cities, including Munich, Hamburg, and the Rhein-Ruhr region, are also exploring similar collaborative concepts. The senator mentioned that there are discussions with Munich about hosting the football events, further emphasizing the bid's collaborative nature.

Political support for the Olympic bid is strong, with parties such as the CDU and SPD expressing enthusiasm for hosting the Games in Berlin, particularly in connection with the 50th anniversary of German reunification. The decision on which cities and regions will be included in the bid will be made by the DOSB later this year.

Bundesminister of Sport Nancy Faeser has previously indicated her support for a bid targeting 2040, recognizing the significance of such an event for the nation.
