Berlin Jazz Radio Appeals for Frequency Continuation

Wed 1st Oct, 2025

The Berlin Jazz Radio is continuing its legal battle to retain its broadcasting frequency amidst a decision that could change its future. The station has lodged an appeal with a higher court against a ruling from the Berlin Administrative Court, which allows a new electronic music station to take over its frequency.

According to a court spokesperson, the timeline for when the Higher Administrative Court of Berlin-Brandenburg will hear the case remains unclear, as there are still periods for submissions from involved parties.

Starting January 1, 2026, the frequency 106.8 MHz, currently held by the jazz station, is set to be allocated to a new broadcaster focused on electronic music. This decision was initially endorsed by the Media Authority of Berlin-Brandenburg (MABB), which has been a point of contention for the jazz station.

Jazz Radio contends that this decision is unlawful and has sought judicial intervention to overturn it. The Administrative Court ruled that the MABB exercised its discretion appropriately in the frequency allocation process, stating that the selections could only be reviewed for significant errors, which the judges did not find in this case.

As the legal proceedings unfold, jazz enthusiasts are left uncertain about the future of one of their beloved stations. Jazz Radio has cultivated a loyal following and is known for its diverse programming that celebrates the genre.

The outcome of this appeal is anticipated not only by the station's supporters but also by the broader music community in Berlin, which values the diversity of its radio offerings.
