Ukrainian Diplomat Calls for Stronger Security Commitments Beyond NATO-Style Guarantees

A seven-year-old boy in Berlin narrowly survived a life-threatening incident when an illegal explosive device, known as a 'shell bomb', detonated directly in front of him during New Year celebrations. The event, which occurred in the Tegel district, has renewed attention on the dangers posed by unauthorized fireworks and the consequences for families affected by such accidents.
On New Year's Eve, the boy was outside with his family, as is traditional in many neighborhoods, to observe the fireworks display. The Emstaler Platz area, surrounded by residential buildings and shops, became the scene of tragedy when the shell bomb exploded between the child's legs. The blast resulted in severe injuries, extensive blood loss, and immediate life-threatening trauma.
Emergency responders and bystanders acted swiftly, providing first aid until the boy could be transported to the Charité University Hospital's emergency department. Medical staff reported that the proximity and promptness of advanced care likely saved his life. The injuries the child sustained were described as severe, including exposed and shattered bones, deep tissue damage, burns, and open wounds on his limbs and hands. Such trauma is rarely seen outside of major industrial accidents or conflict zones.
The boy underwent more than 40 surgical procedures during his treatment. For more than a month, he remained in a medically induced coma and required mechanical ventilation through a tracheostomy. A temporary colostomy was also necessary due to the extent of his injuries. Surgeons prioritized stabilizing his condition and worked intensively to save his legs. Despite the complexity of the case, the multidisciplinary team at Charité succeeded in preserving both limbs, although extensive rehabilitation followed.
After four months of hospitalization and subsequent rehabilitation, the child has returned to school and is able to walk without a wheelchair. Nevertheless, the incident has left significant physical and psychological scars. Large, visible scars on his legs require ongoing medical attention and may necessitate further surgery. The emotional impact persists, with increased anxiety and sleep disturbances. He continues to receive trauma counseling and will need regular medical follow-ups for the foreseeable future.
Authorities have identified a 17-year-old suspect believed to have ignited the explosive device using a fiberglass launch tube in a crowded area. Investigations are ongoing, and the victim's family has expressed concern about the pace and prioritization of the legal process. Police searches were conducted in the area shortly after the blast, but as of now, the case remains unresolved.
This incident was one of several severe firework-related injuries in Berlin during the same holiday period. Nationally, five men lost their lives in similar accidents, with one fatality also attributed to a shell bomb. Shell bombs are classified as high-powered pyrotechnic devices, and their use is restricted to licensed professionals. Nevertheless, illegal possession and detonation of such devices continue to pose serious risks to public safety.
Medical experts and victims' families are calling for stricter enforcement of regulations and heightened public awareness regarding the dangers of illegal fireworks. They emphasize the need for comprehensive education campaigns and stronger policy measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The affected family, deeply impacted by the incident, has chosen to spend subsequent New Year's celebrations outside the country to avoid further trauma.
