Berlin Airport Restores Electronic Check-In Following Cyberattack

Sun 5th Oct, 2025

Berlin's Brandenburg Airport (BER) has announced the restoration of electronic check-in services for passengers after enduring significant operational disruptions due to a recent cyberattack. The attack, which targeted an IT service provider, had severely affected the airport's systems, hindering normal airport functions for several weeks.

As of Sunday morning, the primary system managed by Collins Aerospace, the affected service provider, has been successfully brought back online, according to a spokesperson for the airport. The airport's technical team has conducted extensive security assessments over the weekend, which have yielded positive results, paving the way for gradual reinstatement of services.

Starting Monday, airlines will begin to reconnect to the electronic check-in system in a phased manner, allowing for the reopening of check-in counters and boarding gates. This initiative is part of a comprehensive recovery plan designed to restore full functionality to the airport. Travelers who have experienced prolonged wait times for check-in, boarding, and baggage claim due to the outage can expect improvements as operations normalize.

The cyberattack, which occurred on September 19, impacted several airports across Europe, with Berlin's BER among the most affected. The attack incapacitated essential electronic systems responsible for passenger and baggage handling, leading airlines to resort to manual check-in processes and alternative technologies during the disruption.

In addition to addressing the immediate challenges posed by the attack, airport authorities are working closely with cybersecurity experts to enhance protective measures and prevent future incidents. The situation remains under close observation as officials strive to ensure a smooth transition back to regular operations.

As travel resumes and systems are restored, passengers are encouraged to stay informed about their flight statuses and any potential delays as the airport ramps up its services once again.
