Belarus Releases 52 Political Prisoners Amid US Negotiations

Thu 11th Sep, 2025

The Belarusian government has announced the release of over 50 political prisoners, a move that comes after negotiations with the United States. This release marks a significant development in the ongoing political landscape of Belarus, where President Alexander Lukashenko has faced criticism and protests for his authoritarian rule.

According to reports, 52 individuals have crossed the border into Lithuania, leaving behind a situation characterized by confinement and fear. Among those released are six Lithuanian nationals and a number of foreign nationals from countries including Latvia, Poland, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. The Lithuanian President, Gitanas Nauseda, expressed gratitude to the US for its role in facilitating this development.

This release was foreshadowed during discussions between Lukashenko and US Special Envoy John Coale in Minsk. Lukashenko conveyed his lack of interest in retaining these individuals in custody, suggesting a willingness to negotiate for broader diplomatic agreements.

Notably, the release includes former presidential candidate Nikolai Statkewitsch, while there are no updates regarding the fate of the prominent opposition figure Maria Kolesnikowa.

The backdrop to this event includes widespread protests that erupted in Belarus in 2020, following elections that were widely criticized as fraudulent. In the wake of these protests, the Belarusian authorities initiated a crackdown on dissent, leading to the detention of thousands of opposition activists.

As part of this recent development, the US has indicated a willingness to ease sanctions against Belarus, which includes measures affecting the state airline, Belavia, and a potential thawing of diplomatic relations. The US has expressed interest in reopening its embassy in Minsk, highlighting the need for improved bilateral relations.

Despite these releases, human rights organizations have reported that there remain over 1,000 political prisoners in Belarus, indicating that significant challenges remain in the country's political climate. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, especially in light of Lukashenko's ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and his recent efforts to engage more positively with Western nations.
