Severe Frost and Renewed Snowfall Forecast for Bavaria

Thu 22nd Jan, 2026

The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a clear forecast indicating a significant drop in temperatures and the likelihood of renewed snowfall across Bavaria. Residents and travelers in the region are advised to prepare for a period of intense winter weather as persistent frost and snow showers are expected over several days.

Weather Patterns and Temperature Outlook

According to the latest meteorological data, Bavaria is currently experiencing a mix of sunshine and lingering dense fog. Persistent cold temperatures, known as Dauerfrost, are widespread. The DWD has highlighted that moderate frost is prevalent throughout the state, with the eastern regions facing even harsher conditions. In many areas, especially in eastern Bavaria and along the Danube, fog and low clouds are reducing visibility and keeping temperatures subdued. Conversely, the southern Alpine foothills and higher elevations in the Bavarian Forest are seeing more extended sunny intervals.

Daytime high temperatures are expected to range from minus seven to minus two degrees Celsius in the east, while other regions may see values between minus three and plus two degrees. In areas near the Alps, temperatures could occasionally reach a milder seven degrees Celsius. However, as night falls, the weather will become increasingly severe. Forecasts predict nighttime lows between minus four and minus nine degrees, with eastern parts and the Bavarian Forest potentially experiencing temperatures as low as minus twelve to minus fifteen degrees Celsius.

Anticipated Snowfall and Continuing Cold

Cloud cover is expected to increase from the west overnight, but most areas will remain dry. Slippery conditions caused by frost are likely, particularly in Lower Bavaria. On Friday, overcast skies are predicted to prevail, with some regions in the Bavarian Forest experiencing persistent fog. Maximum temperatures will generally remain below freezing, ranging from minus five to zero degrees Celsius in the east and up to six degrees elsewhere. Overnight, the mercury is projected to drop again, with values between minus three and minus nine degrees widespread.

The forecast for the weekend suggests variable cloud cover on Saturday, with isolated areas experiencing light rain or snowfall. In the afternoon, southwestern regions may see increased sunshine. Daytime highs are expected to vary from minus two degrees along the lower Danube to plus four degrees in the Allgäu region. Nighttime temperatures will again fall between minus three and minus seven degrees. The DWD predicts that snow showers could return as early as Saturday, with a higher likelihood of more significant snowfall during the night leading into Monday. Additional periods of snowfall are possible midweek, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday, potentially resulting in further accumulation and hazardous conditions.

Preparation and Safety Measures

With the prospect of persistent frost and renewed snow, residents are encouraged to ensure that their homes and vehicles are adequately prepared for winter conditions. Authorities recommend monitoring official weather updates and taking necessary precautions, such as winterizing property and preparing for possible disruptions caused by icy roads or power outages.

Travelers and commuters should remain vigilant regarding changing road conditions and potential delays, particularly in regions prone to heavy snowfall and low temperatures. The DWD continues to provide regular updates and advisories to help the public stay informed and safe during the winter period.
