Five Suspects Detained in Early Intervention Against Planned Attack on Bavarian Christmas Market

Sun 14th Dec, 2025

Authorities in Lower Bavaria have apprehended five men suspected of planning an attack on a Christmas market. The investigation indicates that the group had not yet selected a specific target or date for the attack, which was reportedly to be carried out using a vehicle. Security officials acted on information received two days before the arrests, intervening in the early stages of the alleged plot.

According to law enforcement agencies, the suspects are believed to have been motivated by Islamist ideology. The group reportedly intended to target a Christmas market in the Dingolfing area. The suspects--identified as a 56-year-old Egyptian, a 37-year-old Syrian, and three Moroccan nationals aged 22, 28, and 30--were taken into custody by special police units. Four of the men have since been placed under arrest, while the fifth is being held in preventive detention.

Investigators allege that the Egyptian suspect, identified as an Islamic preacher, encouraged the group to commit an act of violence during meetings in a local mosque. The aim was reportedly to cause significant harm to as many people as possible. While the three Moroccan nationals are suspected of preparing to carry out the attack, the Syrian individual is believed to have supported their decision. At this stage, authorities do not suspect a connection to the so-called Islamic State (IS).

Further investigation is ongoing, with analysis of electronic devices such as mobile phones forming part of the inquiry. The Egyptian suspect has reportedly lived in Germany for around 30 years and holds a permanent residency permit. The Moroccan suspects are said to have recently arrived in the country as skilled workers, while the Syrian suspect has been granted subsidiary protection after applying for asylum approximately two years ago.

Bavaria's Interior Ministry has stated that preventive measures will remain in place throughout the Christmas period. Officials emphasize that the early intervention averted a potential threat in its preliminary phase. Security protocols for Christmas markets in the region, including those in major cities such as Munich and Nuremberg, were already robust and are considered sufficient. The police note that the current situation does not warrant additional security measures, given that the suspects have been detained and pose no further risk at this time.

Local authorities have confirmed that Christmas markets in the Dingolfing-Landau district will continue as planned, with no changes to current security arrangements. Organizers and security officials assure the public that comprehensive safety concepts are in place for all events.

This development comes in the context of heightened vigilance at Christmas markets across Germany, following past incidents. In December 2016, an attack on a Berlin Christmas market resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. More recently, a separate incident occurred in Magdeburg, where an individual drove onto a market, causing further casualties. These events have prompted ongoing enhancements to security measures at public gatherings throughout the country.

Authorities reiterate their commitment to safeguarding the public and maintaining heightened surveillance of potential threats. The investigation into the current case is ongoing, with further updates expected as more information becomes available.
