In a shocking incident in Istanbul, the leader of Turkey's main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), Özgür Özel, was attacked during a public event on Sunday. The attack occurred at a memorial gathering for a deceased politician from the pro-Kurdish Democratic Regions Party (Dem-Party) at Taksim Square, a prominent location in the city.

The assailant, who has since been taken into custody, reportedly struck Özel in the face. State news agency Anadolu reported that investigations are currently underway regarding the incident. Following the attack, Özgür Özel reassured the public that he was not injured and was in good health.

According to the Interior Ministry, the attacker is a 66-year-old man with a criminal history, having been convicted of murdering two of his children in 2004, for which he received a life sentence. He was released on probation in 2020. Reports from the newspaper Cumhuriyet indicate that the assailant claimed he did not premeditate the attack. However, he expressed frustration towards the CHP, citing a rejected application for a food card due to his non-affiliation with the party as a contributing factor.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation across the political spectrum in Turkey. The CHP, which has been a vocal opponent of the ruling government, frequently organizes protests and rallies to express dissent against various policies. Among its prominent members is Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, who was recently imprisoned and subsequently removed from his position.

This attack raises serious concerns about the safety and security of political figures in Turkey, particularly as tensions continue to escalate in the lead-up to the upcoming elections. Political analysts suggest that such acts of violence may have significant implications for the political climate in the country.
