Apple Introduces Phone App for Mac and iPad Alongside Enhanced Spam Protection

Apple is set to enhance its system integration features with the upcoming updates to macOS and iPadOS this fall, introducing dedicated phone applications for both Mac and iPad users. This initiative allows users to make Wi-Fi calls to both landlines and mobile networks, provided their iPhone is in proximity.

The new phone app will consolidate all incoming and outgoing calls, voice messages, and contacts, mirroring the functionality found on the iPhone. This integration aims to streamline communication across devices for users who utilize multiple Apple products.

In addition to the phone app, Apple is leveraging artificial intelligence to introduce several new features aimed at enhancing the calling experience. One notable feature is the Call Screening function, which allows users to automatically accept calls from unknown contacts. When enabled, the device will prompt the caller to provide their name and the purpose of their call, displaying this information for the user to decide whether to answer.

Another innovative feature is Live Translation, which offers real-time transcription and translation during calls. This function not only translates spoken words but also integrates seamlessly with FaceTime video calls. However, initial demonstrations have indicated that the translations may come across as somewhat mechanical.

The Hold Assist feature is designed to enhance user experience during call waiting times. Utilizing AI, the device can recognize when a user is in a call queue and will wait quietly until a representative becomes available, at which point it will momentarily request the caller to hold while the user prepares to take the call.

These AI-driven features are initially being rolled out in English, reflecting Apple's ongoing commitment to improving communication technology.

Moreover, the Messages app is receiving significant upgrades, including advanced spam protection. Apple will now automatically categorize messages from unknown contacts into a separate folder and can suppress notifications for these messages unless the user opts to receive them. This is particularly useful for important messages that may come from unfamiliar numbers, such as delivery updates or two-factor authentication codes.

While the aim is to enhance user experience and minimize spam, concerns remain regarding the potential for malicious actors to exploit these features. Instances have been reported where Apple's intelligence systems misidentify phishing attempts as urgent messages, raising questions about the reliability of their spam detection.
