IG Metall Urges Accelerated Electric Mobility Development in Eastern Germany

Tue 16th Sep, 2025

The IG Metall union has called for a rapid expansion of electric mobility in Eastern Germany during its recent automotive conference held in Chemnitz. Union leaders stressed that the future of work in the region heavily depends on advancements in this sector. With thousands of jobs at stake within manufacturing and supply chains, the urgency for action has never been greater.

Christiane Benner, the union's first chair, emphasized the critical role that electric mobility plays in the future of transportation and its significance to the Eastern German economy. She highlighted that many workers face precarious situations, with some companies struggling to keep their heads above water.

During her address, Benner pointed out the responsibilities that both political leaders and businesses must shoulder. She insisted that the government must take decisive action while companies cannot afford to remain passive; they need to initiate changes and invest in innovations to safeguard jobs rather than resorting to layoffs.

Jan Otto, the regional director for Berlin, Brandenburg, and Saxony, expressed concerns about a potential second wave of de-industrialization in Eastern Germany. He noted that the region has established a strong industrial presence through the establishment of new facilities, which must not be jeopardized. Otto called for companies to provide firm commitments regarding their locations and job stability. Furthermore, he urged the federal government to implement promised incentives for electric vehicle purchases without delay.

The conference saw participation from union representatives, works council members, researchers, and politicians, all discussing the pressing need for strategic investments in the electric vehicle industry.
