Major Disruptions as Munich's S-Bahn Central Line Closes for Over a Month

Thu 12th Oct, 2023

Munich's S-Bahn central line faces a significant disruption, with the closure stretching over an entire month. This extended disruption commenced on October 6 and is set to continue until November 6, including All Saints' Day on November 1. The reason cited by Deutsche Bahn for this closure is a combination of maintenance work, infrastructure expansion, and modernization efforts on the city's rail system, in addition to construction related to the second central line.

The disruption has been divided into different phases, affecting only weekends and the early days of November. Below is an overview of the disruptions:

Munich's Central S-Bahn Line Partially Closed: Weekends Impacted For four weekends - October 6 to 9, October 13 to 16, October 27 to 30, and November 3 to 6 - starting from Friday evenings at 10:20 PM until Monday at 4:40 AM, there will be reduced S-Bahn services operating along the central line. Only the S7 and S8 lines will remain unaffected, operating as scheduled. To compensate for the inconvenience, Tram 19 will run more frequently in the evenings, connecting Pasing and the main train station. The affected S-Bahn lines will operate as follows:

S1: Beginning and ending at the main train station, with no stops to or from Moosach. On the first weekend in November, the S1 will only run as far as Moosach, so the U-Bahn will provide a denser service.

S2: This S-Bahn line will operate half-hourly in the west between Petershausen and the main train station or Heimeranplatz, with no stops between Obermenzing and the main train station or Heimeranplatz. Trains between Dachau and Altomünster will run as usual, with the S2 from the east only operating as far as Hirschgarten.

S3: In the west, the S3 will only run as far as Pasing, and in the east, it will only go as far as Ostbahnhof.

S4: It will operate only between Geltendorf and Pasing.

S6: In the west, the S6 will run to the main train station but without stops to or from Pasing, and in the east, it will go as far as Ostbahnhof. On the first weekend in November, the S6 will only run as far as Pasing in the west.

Complete Closure of Munich's Central S-Bahn Line: Schedule Changes From October 20 to 23, starting at 10:30 PM until Monday at 4:40 AM, the central line will be entirely closed. The S-Bahn services during this period will be as follows:

S1: Beginning and ending at the main train station. Between Moosach and the main train station, the S-Bahn line will operate non-stop and only every half hour.

S2: In the west, the S2 line will operate every half hour between Petershausen and the main train station, and every hour between Altomünster and Heimeranplatz. All stops between Obermenzing and the main train station or Heimeranplatz will not be served. In the east, the S-Bahn will only run as far as Leuchtenbergring, with passengers transferring to Tram 21 from that point.

S3: In the west, the S3 line will operate only as far as Pasing, and in the east, it will only go as far as Giesing.

S4: This line will run only between Geltendorf and Pasing.

S6: In the west, the S6 line will only operate as far as the main train station, with no stops to or from Pasing. In the east, the line will run as far as Leuchtenbergring, with passengers transferring to Tram 21 for further travel.

S7: In the west, this S-Bahn line will operate only as far as the main train station, without stopping at Hackerbrücke. In the east, it will run as far as Giesing.

S8: Without stops between Ostbahnhof and Pasing, this line will travel via the South Ring and also bypass Leuchtenbergring station.
