A 45-year-old man is currently facing charges at the Berlin District Court for allegedly conspiring to commit extortion through kidnapping. The accused is said to have plotted with accomplices to abduct a millionaire involved in cryptocurrency, intending to forcibly take him from Berlin to Poland in a bid to extort approximately two million euros worth of digital currency.
During the opening of the trial, the defendant firmly denied the allegations against him. He stated through his lawyer that he had no intentions of kidnapping anyone or engaging in extortion. Instead, he claimed that he and an associate had fabricated such stories to impress an individual who boasted of being a significant figure in the criminal underworld. The defendant characterized their interaction as an attempt to deceive this person.
The investigation into this case began in June 2024, following inquiries related to a separate matter. A covert police operative had established contact with the accused, as revealed by a police officer who testified in court. This undercover agent was allegedly approached by the purported kidnappers to assist with logistical aspects, such as procuring two vehicles for the operation, to which they pretended to agree.
One of the alleged accomplices is reportedly under investigation for illegal arms trafficking and is believed to act as a broker for various criminal enterprises. According to the police testimony, communications among the accused contained detailed plans for the abduction in Berlin, although the specific identity of the intended victim was not disclosed. Nonetheless, law enforcement maintained certainty regarding the existence of the victim based on the gathered evidence.
Starting from late June 2024, the accused and one of his co-defendants were said to have surveilled the residence of the targeted businessman in central Berlin. Shortly thereafter, the accused traveled to Poland to make further preparations for the abduction, as outlined in the indictment. The plan, however, was foiled when one of the alleged accomplices was apprehended by Polish authorities before the kidnapping could be executed.
The proceedings are set to continue, with four additional court dates scheduled through August 13.
