Netphen, North Rhine-Westphalia - A devastating fire broke out in a half-timbered house shortly after 1 AM on Friday, leading to the tragic loss of two lives. The flames erupted from the basement, and a neighbor spotted the fire, promptly alerting the fire department. Unfortunately, by the time help arrived, it was too late for the residents.

The fire service responded with a significant deployment following the emergency call at approximately 1:20 AM. However, the situation was dire. According to police reports, when emergency responders reached the scene moments later, the building was already engulfed in flames.

The estimated damage caused by the fire is around 200,000 euros. Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus managed to rescue a 76-year-old man from the upper floor of the house. Despite initial efforts to revive him, he succumbed to his injuries hours later at a hospital in Siegen.

The man's wife, who was reportedly sleeping in the basement bedroom, was initially reported missing. Shortly after, firefighters discovered a second body within the residence. Due to extensive fire damage, the recovery of the body was delayed, and the woman's identity has yet to be confirmed. Currently, there are no indications of additional occupants in the house.

The firefighting efforts were still ongoing as of Friday morning. By the afternoon, law enforcement officials announced that the second victim had been recovered, though the identification process is still in progress.

As a result of the firefighting operations, Koblenzer Straße is closed. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. A police spokesperson stated that the criminal investigation unit has commenced inquiries, but specific details regarding the fire's origin have not been disclosed. For ongoing investigations, it is essential first to extinguish any remaining hotspots and assess the structural stability of the building. The Technical Relief Organization is currently assisting with stabilization efforts.
