57 Tons of Fruits and Vegetables Collected for the Berlin Food Bank After Fruit Logistica Fair

Sat 8th Feb, 2025

Following the recent Fruit Logistica trade fair, the Berlin Food Bank has successfully collected an impressive 57 tons of surplus fruits and vegetables. This initiative, which aims to rescue excess food and distribute it to those in need, marks a significant annual event for the organization.

The food bank, which has been operational for 31 years, reported that this year's collection was one of its largest ever. More than 500 volunteers participated in gathering the leftover produce, which was transported using 28 trucks. The effort was supported by various organizations including the Technical Relief Organization, the fire department, and the Red Cross.

The collected goods have been taken to the sorting and storage facility at the Berlin wholesale market. Here, they will be inspected and organized by over 200 volunteers. Notably, the most perishable items will be repurposed by the youth program of the food bank into around 2,000 jars of jam.

During the upcoming weekend, the fruits and vegetables will be distributed to various social institutions to ensure that they reach those who need them most. The Berlin Food Bank continues to play a vital role in addressing food waste and supporting vulnerable communities in the city.
