Zelenskyy to Visit Washington for Significant Minerals Agreement

Wed 26th Feb, 2025

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to arrive in Washington this Friday to finalize a significant agreement regarding the joint development of Ukraine's mineral resources. This announcement comes amid reports that Ukraine and the United States have reached a draft deal aimed at enhancing cooperation in the mineral sector, which could potentially ease recent tensions between the two leaders.

The proposed agreement is set to facilitate collaborative efforts between the two nations in tapping into Ukraine's mineral wealth. According to senior Ukrainian officials, the revenues generated from this initiative would contribute to a new fund shared by the United States and Ukraine.

However, the draft deal notably lacks specific security guarantees that Ukraine has been seeking. While it does mention security provisions, it does not delineate the role of the United States in providing such guarantees. Officials have indicated that both presidents will address these concerns during their upcoming meeting.

In a prior exchange, Zelenskyy had dismissed Trump's demand for $500 billion worth of valuable minerals, a figure significantly higher than the $60 billion in military aid the U.S. has provided to Ukraine since the onset of the Russian invasion. Trump has implied that the potential value of the deal could reach trillions, but the specifics remain undefined.

Alongside discussions of the minerals deal, Trump has suggested that a form of peacekeeping presence may be necessary in Ukraine, with some European nations showing willingness to contribute troops. He expressed confidence that Russia would agree to the deployment of these peacekeepers, although the Kremlin has denied such claims.

The relationship between the U.S. and Ukraine has become increasingly strained as Ukraine marks the third anniversary of Russia's invasion. Ukraine is hopeful that the minerals agreement will help mend ties with the Trump administration, which have deteriorated since Trump began his second term.

In recent comments, Trump has labeled Zelenskyy a 'dictator without elections' and criticized his leadership, urging him to act swiftly in negotiations to resolve the conflict with Russia. Zelenskyy, in turn, has accused Trump of being misled by Russian disinformation. Ukrainian officials assert that the signing of the agreement is crucial to ensuring the continued flow of U.S. military support, which remains critical for Ukraine's defense efforts.
