Xiaomi, a company primarily recognized for its consumer electronics and smartphones, is expanding its operations into the automotive sector. Following the successful launch of its first electric vehicle (EV) in China, the company has announced plans to establish a research and development (R&D) center for electric vehicles in Germany, specifically in Munich.
The new center aims to leverage the expertise of around 50 employees, primarily focused on management and business operations. The decision to set up the R&D facility was confirmed through a report by Nikkei, highlighting Xiaomi's intent to enhance its footprint in the European automotive market.
In a strategic move to bolster its team, Xiaomi is reportedly looking to recruit top-tier talent from competitors, ensuring that its Munich center is staffed with skilled professionals. Leading the center will be Rudolf Dittrich, a former BMW manager who has an extensive background in motorsport, including significant experience in the company's motorsport division. He will be joined by Ricard Aiguabella Macau, a former aerodynamicist from the Ferrari Formula 1 team, further signaling Xiaomi's commitment to building a high-caliber team.
One of the primary projects for the Munich team will involve development work on the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra prototype, which previously set a record on the Nürburgring's Nordschleife circuit. The SU7 is designed to compete with high-performance electric vehicles, such as the Porsche Taycan, and has already gained traction in the Chinese market.
In addition to the R&D efforts, Xiaomi is also putting together a sales team based in Düsseldorf, which will focus on preparing for the company's entry into the European markets, particularly in Germany, France, and Spain. This move underscores the company's ambition to expand its electric vehicle offerings beyond its home market and establish a significant presence in the competitive European automotive landscape.
As Xiaomi continues to innovate in the electric vehicle space, the establishment of the Munich development center represents a pivotal step in its strategy to become a key player in the global automotive market.
