White House Responds Strongly to Amazon's Proposal on Customs Cost Labeling

The White House has expressed significant criticism of Amazon's recent proposal to disclose the customs duties on its products. This idea was reportedly considered by the online retailer but was ultimately not intended for implementation.

According to a report by Punchbowl News, Amazon had contemplated providing transparency on the additional costs incurred due to newly imposed U.S. import tariffs directly within its online storefront. However, the White House reacted negatively, as this could highlight the contentious tariff policies of President Donald Trump.

Internally, Amazon discussed the possibility of indicating how much of the price of certain products in its discount section, known as the Amazon Haul Store, was attributable to tariffs. The White House spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, described this move as a "hostile and political act" on Amazon's part, suggesting that the administration is concerned that consumers might react unfavorably to the price increases caused by the tariffs.

The tariffs in question, which were enacted by Trump in early April, have been a point of contention. While many tariffs have been suspended for a period of 90 days, those on Chinese imports have continued to rise incrementally, currently standing at an alarming 145 percent on certain goods. A substantial volume of Amazon's inventory is sourced from China, making the impact of these tariffs particularly significant.

In response to the backlash, Amazon has sought to clarify its position. Tim Doyle, a spokesperson for the company, stated that the idea of labeling customs costs was merely a concept under discussion and emphasized that it would not be put into action, asserting, "That will not happen."

This incident is likely to complicate the already strained relationship between President Trump and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. There had been some signs of improvement in their interactions leading up to the upcoming presidential election, including Bezos refraining from endorsing the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the Washington Post, a publication he owns.
