Volkswagen is urging the government to enhance incentives for private buyers of electric vehicles (EVs) as part of its transition to electric mobility. The company recently celebrated a significant milestone, having delivered 1.5 million vehicles from its ID series.
According to Martin Sander, the head of sales at Volkswagen, a clear commitment from the government and targeted financial support are essential to mitigate the hesitance among private consumers and stimulate demand. He noted that a large proportion of new registrations for electric cars currently comes from commercial clients, who benefit from various tax advantages.
During the celebration at the Emden plant in Lower Saxony--where only electric vehicles are manufactured--Sander emphasized the need for policies that specifically cater to individual buyers. The ID.7 model, which was highlighted as the most registered electric vehicle in Germany during the first half of 2025, underscores the potential for growth in this segment.
Lower Saxony's Prime Minister, Olaf Lies, praised Volkswagen's efforts at the Emden facility, suggesting it exemplifies the region's adaptability and commitment to automotive innovation. The ID.7 Tourer, in particular, has garnered attention for its design and features, contributing to its popularity among consumers.
However, experts have expressed concern about the overall sluggishness of the German automotive industry regarding the transition to electric vehicles. According to Frank Schwope, an automotive expert and lecturer at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences, the major German manufacturers have been slow to respond to the rising demand for electric cars. He pointed out that these companies are struggling to appeal to younger consumers and modern buyers, particularly in the competitive Chinese market.
As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, Volkswagen's push for greater governmental support may prove crucial in encouraging more private individuals to consider electric vehicles, thereby enhancing the overall market for sustainable transportation.
