Volcanic Eruption on Flores Island: Impact on Flights to Bali

Fri 21st Mar, 2025

The Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano on Flores Island in Indonesia has erupted, sending ash and debris several kilometers into the atmosphere. This event has prompted authorities to raise the alert level, affecting flight operations to the popular tourist destination of Bali.

Reports indicate that multiple eruptions began on Thursday, with the volcano discharging significant amounts of ash. The Geological Agency of Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has confirmed the eruptions, which have raised concerns over the safety of air travel in the region.

Following the volcanic activity, Jetstar, an Australian low-cost airline, announced it would temporarily halt flights to Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, Bali, citing safety precautions. The airport's operations may resume later in the day, but uncertainty remains regarding the rescheduling of flights.

In light of the previous eruptions from the approximately 1,600-meter-high Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano in late 2023, during which several residents lost their lives and thousands were displaced, the current situation has raised alarms among local populations and travelers alike. Reports of power outages in nearby areas have further compounded the challenges faced by residents.

Authorities have advised locals and tourists to wear protective masks and avoid the vicinity of the volcano, particularly an eight-kilometer radius around the crater. The alert level for the volcano has been elevated to Level 4 on a scale where 5 indicates a maximum threat.

The region's geographical positioning along the Pacific Ring of Fire renders it highly susceptible to volcanic eruptions and seismic activity. This active zone is known for frequent geological disturbances, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Flores Island, situated east of Bali, is renowned for its stunning landscapes and diving spots, attracting tourists from around the globe. The Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano, which has been active since late 2023, is part of a twin volcanic formation, with its counterpart being the Lewotobi Perempuan, standing at 1,703 meters. The two peaks are located approximately two kilometers apart.

As developments unfold, updates regarding flight operations and safety measures will continue to be communicated to ensure the well-being of residents and tourists in the region.
