Germany’s Hidden Gender Inequality: Extra Responsibilities for Men
Section: politics
The police forces in Berlin and Brandenburg have initiated an extensive speed enforcement campaign this week, targeting drivers who exceed speed limits and commit other traffic violations. The operation, known as the 'Blitzermarathon,' is part of a wider European initiative aimed at improving road safety and reducing accidents caused by speeding.
This year, the campaign runs throughout the week, with intensified speed checks scheduled until Sunday. Notably, Berlin's police are participating in the initiative alongside their Brandenburg counterparts, marking a shift from previous years when Berlin did not join the coordinated effort. The campaign is coordinated by the European traffic police network, Roadpool, and involves several countries across the continent.
In Brandenburg, the focus of the enforcement activities is primarily on roads outside urban areas, which have historically been prone to speeding-related incidents. Authorities have indicated that police will be present at accident-prone roads, major intersections, school routes, and areas near hospitals and senior residences. Mobile speed cameras are expected to be widely deployed, especially in the eastern parts of Berlin.
The decision by Berlin's police to join this year's campaign follows an internal review to evaluate current accident hotspots and areas frequently used by speeding drivers. The aim is to assess whether previous findings remain accurate or if adjustments to enforcement strategies are necessary to enhance public safety.
According to official data, Berlin has seen a concerning number of traffic-related fatalities and accidents in recent years. As of early April this year, seven individuals have lost their lives in traffic accidents within the city. Last year, 37 people died on Berlin's roads, compared to 55 the year before. Additionally, the total number of recorded accidents in Berlin rose by just over three percent in 2025, reaching more than 137,000 incidents.
Brandenburg, which has regularly participated in these annual enforcement weeks, reported a rise in accidents attributed to inappropriate speeds. Police records indicate that nearly 6,380 accidents in Brandenburg last year were linked to drivers not adjusting their speed to road or traffic conditions, up from approximately 6,160 the previous year. Excessive speed remains one of the primary causes of serious accidents in the region.
The speed enforcement week is part of a broader strategy to encourage safer driving habits and raise awareness among motorists about the dangers of speeding. By increasing the visibility of police patrols and mobile speed cameras, authorities hope to deter reckless behavior and reduce the number of serious accidents on roads in both Berlin and Brandenburg.
Throughout the week, residents and commuters are advised to respect speed limits and be mindful of increased police presence, particularly in areas identified as accident hotspots. The campaign underscores the ongoing commitment of local and regional law enforcement agencies to protecting road users and fostering a safer traffic environment for all.
