On April 30, 2025, Vietnam observed the 50th anniversary of the conclusion of the Vietnam War with a significant military celebration in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon. This historic event featured a large parade that included military contingents from China, Laos, and Cambodia, marking a notable moment in regional cooperation.
The parade drew massive crowds, many of whom arrived early to secure their viewing spots. Attendees displayed national flags and sang patriotic songs, showcasing the spirit of unity among the citizens. A dramatic aerial display included helicopters and fighter jets flying over the procession, enhancing the festive atmosphere. Approximately 13,000 individuals participated in the event, comprising military personnel, veterans, local citizens, and militia members.
The Vietnam War, which began in 1954, culminated on April 30, 1975, when North Vietnamese forces captured Saigon, leading to the reunification of Vietnam under communist rule. This pivotal event resulted in the renaming of Saigon to Ho Chi Minh City in honor of the nation's founding leader.
During the celebrations, Vietnam's Communist Party chief emphasized the significance of the day, referring to the event as a triumph of justice over oppression. He recalled the profound words of Ho Chi Minh, asserting the enduring unity of the Vietnamese people. The fall of Saigon marked the end of a 20-year conflict that caused extensive casualties, including approximately 3 million Vietnamese and nearly 60,000 American lives.
In his address, the party chief expressed gratitude for the support that North Vietnam received from the Soviet Union and China, as well as solidarity from Laos and Cambodia. He also acknowledged the backing from progressive individuals worldwide, including those in the United States.
Veterans participating in the parade reflected on their experiences, with some advocating for peace and reconciliation. A 69-year-old former truck driver stated that the focus should now be on fostering friendship between the United States and Vietnam, highlighting that the war is a distant memory. Another veteran, who traveled from Hanoi, expressed pride in his contributions to the liberation of the south, while emphasizing that animosity should not persist, urging for future collaboration in harmony.
In recent years, Vietnam has made significant strides in improving relations with the United States, marking 30 years of diplomatic ties. The designation of the US as a comprehensive strategic partner reflects Vietnam's commitment to strengthening international relationships on par with those of China and Russia.
The anniversary parade also featured cultural performances, including traditional dances, which added to the celebratory ambiance of the event, symbolizing both remembrance and progress in a nation that has undergone substantial transformation since the war's end.
