Verdi Initiates Strikes Affecting Mail and Package Deliveries

Thu 6th Feb, 2025

In the ongoing negotiations regarding labor contracts at Deutsche Post, the union Verdi has called for a strike that will impact mail and package deliveries across various locations in Germany. This strike is set to take place as Verdi seeks to increase pressure on the postal management ahead of renewed discussions.

The strike, which marks the sixth day of warning strikes initiated by Verdi since last week, is expected to disrupt operations significantly. Postal workers, including those engaged in both letter and package deliveries, will participate in this industrial action. Early reports suggest that a minor percentage of total mail volume will be affected, leading to delays of one to two days for some deliveries.

Verdi is advocating for a wage increase of seven percent and three additional vacation days for its members, emphasizing the need for increased recovery time due to heightened workloads. The union is also proposing that members receive a total of four extra vacation days.

In response, Deutsche Post has expressed concerns regarding the economic feasibility of these demands. The management highlights the substantial investments required for the company and notes a decline in letter volumes due to the digital transition, which impacts revenue. As a result, they indicate that there is limited room for wage increases.

The next round of negotiations is scheduled for January 12, providing both parties an opportunity to address the ongoing disputes and work towards a resolution.
