Germany’s Hidden Gender Inequality: Extra Responsibilities for Men
Section: politics
The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has detained two female relatives of Qasem Soleimani, the former head of Iran's elite Quds Force who was killed in a targeted American operation in 2020. The apprehension occurred as part of the US government's intensified efforts to address violations of immigration law, which have become more pronounced during President Donald Trump's current term.
According to official statements, ICE took into custody the niece and grand-niece of Soleimani after the US Department of State revoked their permanent residency permits, commonly known as Green Cards. The move followed a review by authorities, which concluded that their continued residency in the United States was no longer considered lawful.
Qasem Soleimani, whose leadership of the Quds Force made him a prominent figure in Iran's military and political landscape, was killed in January 2020 during a targeted US airstrike. In Iran, he remains a highly venerated figure and is often portrayed as a martyr by the country's leadership. His death marked a significant escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran, influencing diplomatic and security dynamics in the region.
The two women detained by ICE were reportedly residing in the United States under the legal protections afforded by their Green Cards. However, the US government cited concerns over their public expressions of support for the Iranian regime, which is designated by Washington as a sponsor of terrorism. Specifically, the State Department referenced social media activity as a factor in its decision to revoke their residency status. Officials asserted that such expressions of allegiance to a foreign government perceived as hostile to US interests could undermine national security.
In addition to the actions taken against the two women, US authorities have also imposed an entry ban on the spouse of Soleimani's niece, barring him from traveling to or residing in the United States. The measures are part of a broader policy framework aimed at curbing the influence of individuals and entities linked to the Iranian government, particularly those perceived as endorsing or supporting its security apparatus.
ICE's enforcement actions form part of a wider trend of stricter immigration control and enhanced scrutiny of individuals from countries subject to US sanctions or heightened security concerns. The agency has indicated that it will continue to prioritize cases involving persons who are believed to pose potential risks to national security or have connections to foreign governments identified as adversarial.
