UN Security Council Lifts Sanctions Against Syrian Interim President Ahmed al-Scharaa

The United Nations Security Council has voted to remove sanctions previously imposed on Syria's interim president, Ahmed al-Scharaa, and his interior minister, Anas Hasan Chattab. This decision comes shortly before al-Scharaa's scheduled diplomatic visit to Washington, D.C., for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump.

The resolution, introduced by the United States, was passed with overwhelming support from Security Council members, with only China choosing to abstain. The approval effectively lifts travel bans, asset freezes, and arms embargoes that had been enforced due to alleged links to extremist groups like the so-called Islamic State (IS) and Al-Qaeda.
