Ukrainian President Seeks Taurus Missile Support from Germany

Wed 2nd Apr, 2025

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has expressed his hope that Friedrich Merz, who is anticipated to be the next Chancellor of Germany, will provide the Taurus cruise missiles to support Ukraine in its ongoing conflict. During a meeting with Germany's acting Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in Kyiv, Zelensky indicated that discussions regarding the potential delivery of the missile system are underway. However, he refrained from disclosing specific details until Merz officially assumes the role of Chancellor.

When asked if he expected Merz to make a swift decision regarding the missile supply, Zelensky responded affirmatively, stating that it is indeed more than just a hope. Baerbock addressed inquiries regarding the Taurus missiles by noting that, as an outgoing minister, she cannot preemptively comment on decisions that will be made by the incoming government. She did emphasize that the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has consistently recognized the importance of providing advanced weaponry to Ukraine.

Merz, who left the question of missile delivery open at the end of February, acknowledged the necessity for Ukraine to receive the systems it needs for its defense. He stated that whether the Taurus missiles are the chosen system or if alternatives would be considered will depend on consultations with European allies. He also cautioned that Germany must avoid becoming a combatant in the conflict, asserting that the country should not be drawn into the war in Ukraine.

Currently, Olaf Scholz, the acting Chancellor from the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has firmly rejected the proposal to send Taurus missiles to Ukraine, expressing concerns that such actions could lead Germany into the war.
