Ukrainian Paratroopers Inflict Heavy Losses on Russian Forces

The Ukrainian military has reportedly achieved a significant counteroffensive near the city of Pokrowsk, which has been a focal point for Russian troops for several months. According to the Sitscheslawsky Brigade of the Ukrainian Army, they successfully captured the village of Kotlyne, previously under Russian control since late January.

Details from the online platform 'DeepState,' which is affiliated with the Ukrainian military, indicate that the capture of Kotlyne is a critical development in the ongoing conflict. The Russian army had aimed to secure the M04 highway that connects Pokrowsk and Dnipro, necessitating a substantial troop deployment to the region.

The Ukrainian forces utilized extensive artillery support, first-person view drones, and precision munitions to carry out their operation. Reports indicate that during the preparatory phase of this counteroffensive, Ukrainian paratroopers inflicted significant casualties, claiming to have killed 275 Russian soldiers and wounded another 203.

However, Russian state media has acknowledged the intensity of the Ukrainian counterattacks in the area, though they maintain that their troops have retained their positions. Should the retaking of Kotlyne be confirmed, it would represent a notable military success for Ukraine, especially considering the adverse developments faced on various fronts in recent months.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed optimism regarding the situation around Pokrowsk, stating earlier in February that conditions had recently improved. The Russian military is currently positioned just a few kilometers from the M04 highway and the central Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrowsk, a territory they had not previously advanced into since the onset of the war.

In parallel developments, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have recaptured two villages in the Kursk region, which has been partially occupied by Ukrainian forces.

Looking ahead, President Zelenskyy is expected to attend a special EU summit next Thursday, where discussions will focus on the latest developments in Ukraine. EU Council President António Costa has extended an invitation to Zelenskyy for the meeting scheduled for March 6. The summit aims to address ongoing support for Ukraine and European defense strategies.

In his invitation, Costa highlighted a renewed dynamic concerning Ukraine, advocating for comprehensive and lasting peace initiatives. The summit will address additional support measures for Ukraine and the broader implications for European security. Since the onset of the full-scale invasion by Russia, EU member states have contributed approximately 60% of military aid to Ukraine and have welcomed over four million Ukrainian refugees. Germany is also planning to increase its military budget this year, with discussions about the enhancement of special defense funds underway.
