Ukraine is bracing for a spell of extreme cold, as the national meteorological service has issued warnings of a significant drop in temperatures across the country. According to the State Emergency Service, nighttime temperatures are expected to plummet to as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius from Sunday through Tuesday, with daytime highs remaining between minus 15 and minus 22 degrees Celsius. The capital city, Kyiv, is among the regions forecasted to bear the brunt of these frigid conditions, with only a gradual rise in temperatures expected from the middle of the following week.
These harsh weather conditions are unfolding against the backdrop of intensified attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Russian military strikes this winter have targeted nearly all of the country's power plants, with only nuclear facilities reportedly remaining unscathed. The scale and frequency of these attacks have significantly exceeded those seen in previous years of the ongoing conflict, coinciding with an already colder-than-usual winter season.
The consequences of these assaults have been particularly severe in Kyiv, where large-scale electricity and heating outages have left hundreds of apartment blocks without heat. As a result, disruptions to basic utilities such as water supply have also occurred, as systems cannot function without electricity at such low temperatures. Local authorities report that approximately 600,000 residents in the capital are currently without power in their homes.
Humanitarian organizations are expressing mounting concern over the well-being of millions of people affected by the outages. Aid groups highlight that the deprivation of electricity, heating, and hot water is especially dangerous for vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and those with health conditions. Individuals residing in high-rise buildings face additional risks, as many are unable to access essential services or leave their homes when elevators are non-operational. Limited mobility further isolates these residents, making it difficult to obtain food, medication, or emergency assistance.
International responses have been swift, with the German government and the European Union condemning the deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure. European officials have characterized these attacks as attempts to force the Ukrainian populace into submission by depriving them of heat and power. In response, new packages of winter aid and support have been allocated to assist Ukraine in mitigating the humanitarian impact of the ongoing energy crisis.
As the cold wave approaches, emergency services and relief agencies continue to urge residents to exercise caution and seek available support where possible. The combination of extreme weather and compromised infrastructure underscores the urgent need for international assistance and long-term solutions to protect civilians during the ongoing conflict.
