Ukraine Disrupts Russian Airports with New Drone Offensive

Sun 8th Jun, 2025

In a significant escalation of hostilities, Ukrainian forces have launched a drone attack that has temporarily grounded operations at two major airports in Moscow. The mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, confirmed the disruption via social media, indicating that both Domodedovo and Vnukovo airports were affected by the assault.

The incident occurred following reports from the Russian Ministry of Defense, which stated that Ukraine had conducted an overnight strike involving 61 drones. This attack comes on the heels of ongoing air raids by Russia against Ukrainian territories, particularly targeting the Dnipropetrovsk region, where recent assaults have resulted in casualties and damage to infrastructure, including a kindergarten.

Amidst this turmoil, discussions regarding a potential prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia have also hit a snag. Following negotiations in Istanbul, both parties had aimed to finalize an agreement for the exchange of prisoners and the remains of soldiers. However, allegations of delays and manipulation have emerged, with each side accusing the other of failing to adhere to the agreed timeline.

The Russian side has claimed that Ukraine unexpectedly postponed the exchange, which was set to involve injured soldiers and those under the age of 25. Ukraine has retaliated by stating that Russia's proposed list of prisoners does not align with the terms of their agreement.

In the context of the ongoing conflict, the situation remains dire, with both sides suffering heavy losses. Ukrainian military reports indicate that over 1,120 Russian troops were either killed or wounded in a single day at the front lines, contributing to a growing toll that may soon approach one million Russian casualties since the conflict began in February 2022.

This latest round of fighting underscores the continued volatility of the situation and the challenges both nations face in reaching a resolution. With no immediate end in sight, the humanitarian and military implications of this conflict continue to escalate.
