The ongoing labor negotiations between the cabin crew union Ufo and Lufthansa have reached an impasse, as Ufo announced that discussions regarding a comprehensive collective agreement for cabin personnel have failed. This setback raises concerns about potential disruptions for the airline, which has been navigating a series of labor disputes.
Joachim Vázquez Bürger, the chairman of Ufo, emphasized that despite the union's efforts to engage in dialogue since March 2024, Lufthansa's management has consistently rejected proposals aimed at improving working conditions and compensation for employees. The union claims that this refusal threatens well-paying jobs at Lufthansa and its subsidiaries, including Lufthansa CityLine and the newly established Discover Airlines.
In response to the stalled negotiations, Ufo has indicated a shift in strategy, planning to pursue traditional union activities by negotiating airline by airline and contract by contract. The union's leadership criticized the current state of employment conditions, highlighting that the new airlines under the Lufthansa umbrella are operating under what they describe as unacceptable labor and pay standards.
As Ufo grapples with its negotiations, Lufthansa is simultaneously facing challenges from its pilot union, Vereinigung Cockpit (VC). The pilots are currently participating in a ballot to decide on potential strikes, which could exacerbate the airline's operational difficulties. This vote, which began last Friday, will conclude on September 30, and concerns critical issues such as pension contributions and transitional benefits for approximately 4,800 pilots.
The VC is advocating for significantly increased employer contributions to the pension funds, underscoring the broader dissatisfaction among Lufthansa's workforce over compensation and working conditions. The airline now finds itself at a crossroads, facing mounting pressure from both cabin crew and pilots, which could lead to a new wave of labor actions.
This breakdown in negotiations and the looming threat of strikes highlight the fragile state of labor relations at Lufthansa, prompting concerns about the airline's future operations and employee morale.
