Uber is expanding its operations in Germany by introducing a new courier service, allowing users to send items across several major cities. This development marks a significant step for the ride-hailing and food delivery company, which has primarily focused on car rentals and food deliveries in the region.
The newly launched service, named 'Uber Courier', is now available in nine cities, including Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover, Stuttgart, and Mannheim. This service follows a similar launch in the United Kingdom just a week prior.
Uber plans to leverage its existing network of delivery partners for this initiative. Depending on the size and distance of the item, couriers will use either bicycles or cars for deliveries. Each package can weigh up to 20 kilograms, and the total weight per delivery cannot exceed 60 kilograms. Additionally, items must be able to fit in the trunk of a standard mid-sized vehicle. As with other services through the Uber app, users will receive an estimated cost based on travel time and distance before confirming their delivery.
According to Christoph Weigler, Uber's country manager in Germany, this new offering is particularly aimed at local small businesses. It provides them with a quick and efficient way to deliver ordered products to customers within the city.
Since its entry into the German market over a decade ago, Uber has faced significant opposition from taxi associations, labor unions, and certain political groups. Critics have raised concerns regarding the company's business practices and the working conditions of its partner drivers. Traditional taxi operators have expressed strong disapproval of Uber's business model.
In a bid to improve relations with the taxi sector, Uber opened its app to all taxi companies in Germany last year. This strategic move aimed to bolster its presence and position itself as a partner within the traditional taxi industry. Currently, about 20% of all taxis in Berlin are reported to be collaborating with Uber, contributing to a network of over 4,000 taxi drivers throughout Germany.
