TSMC Launches First European Chip Design Center in Munich

Tue 27th May, 2025

The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's leading semiconductor contract manufacturer, has announced the establishment of its first European Union Design Center (EUDC) in Munich, Germany. This initiative follows TSMC's recent investments in Europe, including the construction of its first semiconductor fabrication plant in the region.

The EUDC aims to collaborate closely with TSMC's clients to develop chip designs that may be manufactured at TSMC facilities or through its joint venture, the European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC). The center is expected to strengthen TSMC's partnerships with European businesses, with plans for the EUDC to commence operations in the third quarter of 2025.

At the EUDC, clients will have access to all manufacturing processes offered by TSMC and ESMC. The ESMC, located in Dresden, is set to produce chips with feature sizes ranging from 28 to 12 nanometers, beginning in late 2027. The focus will be on microcontrollers for automotive applications, incorporating innovative integrated non-volatile memory technologies such as Resistive Random Access Memory (RRAM) and Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory (MRAM), which TSMC intends to develop in collaboration with partners in Munich. Meanwhile, TSMC is set to begin production of 2-nanometer chips (N2) in Taiwan later this year.

Furthermore, TSMC has identified additional application areas for designs developed at the EUDC, including industrial applications, artificial intelligence (AI), telecommunications, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The EUDC will work in conjunction with TSMC's existing design centers located in Taiwan, the United States, Canada, China, and Japan.

Notably, Apple has been active in Munich since 2019, following its acquisition of a research center from Intel. This facility has contributed to the development of Apple's first in-house mobile modem, the C1, for the iPhone 16e, as well as its proprietary M-series processors. Given this backdrop, collaborations between Apple and TSMC at the Munich location are anticipated.

While TSMC has yet to disclose specific details regarding staffing for the Munich facility, job postings have already appeared on platforms such as LinkedIn, indicating a proactive approach to recruitment.
