Trump Refuses to Call Minnesota Governor Following Family Tragedy

Wed 18th Jun, 2025

Following a tragic incident involving the shooting of a Democratic lawmaker and her husband in Minnesota, Governor Tim Walz expressed his disappointment over President Donald Trump's refusal to reach out to him. The governor's spokesperson indicated that Trump has opted not to initiate a call to Walz, despite the profound loss that has impacted the state.

In a statement, the spokesperson emphasized that Governor Walz hopes President Trump could embody the role of a leader for all Americans. This sentiment arises not from political divisions but rather from the need for compassion towards the affected families and the broader community in Minnesota.

The tragic events unfolded on June 15, when Democratic Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were fatally shot in their home located in Brooklyn Park. Additionally, another attack occurred in Champlin, resulting in severe injuries to Democratic State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, though Hoffman is reportedly recovering.

Walz, who had previously collaborated with the late Hortman in the state legislature, mourned her loss, remarking that the state has lost a remarkable leader and he has lost a dear friend.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Trump made it clear during remarks to reporters on June 17 that he would not be reaching out to Governor Walz. He characterized the governor as 'crazy' and questioned the necessity of making contact, implying that it would be a waste of time.

In his comments, Trump expressed that he had already conveyed his condolences via his social media platform, stating that such violence is intolerable in the United States and offered blessings to the people of Minnesota. However, a direct communication with Governor Walz seems unlikely, especially considering the political rivalry that exists between them, particularly after Walz's involvement in the recent presidential election as a running mate alongside Kamala Harris.

The political atmosphere in the U.S. has been tense, with several instances of violence against politicians occurring in recent months. Notably, during the 2024 presidential campaign, an assassination attempt was made on Trump himself, and earlier this year, an arson attack targeted the home of Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.

The suspect in the Minnesota shootings has been apprehended, facing charges that could lead to the death penalty or life in prison. Authorities revealed that the accused had a list of targets, which included multiple Democratic politicians, highlighting the alarming trend of violence directed at public officials.
