The Trump administration is moving forward with plans to scrutinize federal funding and research contracts amounting to approximately $9 billion for Harvard University. This initiative is being framed by the government as a necessary action against antisemitism, while critics argue it represents a direct attack on academic freedom and scientific inquiry. The announcement follows an open letter from 94 Harvard professors that criticized the administration's policies just two days prior. Similar funding cut notifications have already been issued to universities in Pennsylvania and New York.
In a related development, President Trump is reconsidering his choice for the United States ambassador to the United Nations. After retracting the nomination of Elise Stefanik, a Republican congresswoman, he has mentioned Richard Grenell, the former U.S. ambassador to Germany, as a potential candidate. However, Trump has indicated that he has a total of 29 individuals in mind for the position. Grenell's tenure in Germany from 2018 to 2020 was marked by controversy.
Additionally, Trump has expressed intentions to travel to the Middle East, with a visit potentially slated for May. During this trip, he aims to meet with leaders in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, among other destinations. Trump stated that the purpose of the visit is not crisis management, but rather to encourage investment in the United States by rewarding Saudi Arabia for its economic contributions. He also anticipates job creation commitments from these nations to benefit the American workforce.
In another notable occurrence, popular musician Kid Rock attended a White House event where Trump signed an executive order addressing ticket scalping for live events. Kid Rock, who identifies as a capitalist and deregulation advocate, acknowledged that while he supports free-market practices, there seems to be a need for intervention to combat price gouging in the ticket industry. Trump admitted his limited knowledge on the subject but emphasized the importance of the initiative.
Moreover, a federal judge has upheld protections against deportation for approximately 350,000 Venezuelans living in the United States. District Judge Edward Chen blocked the Trump administration's efforts to terminate the Temporary Protection Status (TPS) for these individuals, citing the severe disruption it would cause to their lives and livelihoods. Chen noted the lack of evidence presented by the Department of Homeland Security to justify the proposed cancellation of this protection, asserting that it would lead to substantial economic losses and negatively impact public health and safety across the nation.
